Q1. Explain the difference between a Tourist map and a Roadmap.

Answer:

The difference between a Tourist map and a Road map:

Tourist Map:

Tourist maps are designed for tourists. Such maps serve to acquaint tourists with a given place and provide information on possible travel routes,  on the location of specific landmarks, and on the availability of tourist services and transport and areas of Interest.

Road Map:

A road map is a map that shows highways, railways, and various routes of a particular city or area.

Q.2 Why is a scale used on maps? Write about the types of scale.

Ans:

Scale: Scale is the ratio between ground distance and map distance. This scale is always shown at the bottom of a map.

Types of scale: the scale is normally of three types.

1. Linear scale  2 statement of scale 3. Representative fraction

1. Linear Scale: This scale is always shown in the form of a line that is divided into sub-divisions. The first division is always marked as 0 (zero).

2. Statement of Scale. This scale is always shown in the form of a statement.

e.g

1 cm = 1 kilometer

1 cm = 4 miles.

Representative Fraction: This is an international scale. Distance is represented through fractions on this scale. The numerator of this fraction is always 1 which shows the distance on the map. Whereas the denominator of this fraction represents the distance on the ground. The basic formula is 1/63360.

1/253,440 or 1 : 2533440

1 mile = 63366"

"Physical Features of Pakistan"

Q1. Write a comprehensive note on the plains of Pakistan.

Ans: The plains of Pakistan are very fertile. The climate, water, and soil of this region are suitable for farming. The plains of Pakistan are divided into two parts.

  • The upper Indus Plain
  • The lower Indus Plain

Upper Indus Plain: The upper area of the Indus River covers most of the province of Punjab. It stretches from Kalabagh (Mianwali) to Mithan-Kot near Bhawalpur (Punjab) where all five rivers join together. It is also called the land of five rivers, which include the Indus, Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, and Sutlej.

Plain is made of soft and fertile soil brought down by rivers. There is a network of canals to irrigate the arable land.

Lower Indus Plain:  Below Mithan-not till Thatta (Sindh) where Indus forms its delta. The area is called the Lower Indus Plain. The Indus River flows as a single river before falling into the Arabian Sea. This plan is also very fertile and is irrigated by the Indus River. The eastern part of the plain consists of the dearest area of Thar. It is a dry sandy desert.

Q2. Compare the lives of people living in mountainous areas with those living in desert areas:

Answer.

Lives of People of Desert Areas:

Pakistan's desert region is very hot. Due to a lack of water, farming is not possible here. People live here like nomads and they depend on embroidery handicrafts and their domestic animals for their livelihood.

Lives of People of  Mountainous Areas:

The winters in the mountains are very cold and often snowy. In winter, the people of this area wear thick woolen clothes to protect themselves from the cold. Summer is mild. Cattle rearing is an important occupation of the people here. In addition,  tourism is also a source of income. Farming is practiced by people living in the valleys.

Q3. What is the importance of the diverse physical characteristics of Pakistan in terms of tourism?

Ans: From the stretches of the great mountain ranges in the north to the vast beautiful delta of the Indus River in the south. Pakistan remains a land blessed with nature's beauty and majestic mountains. with shining deserts and some of the world's highest peaks, the country had great attractions for sightseers, skiers, and mountaineers. For those interested in white water falling, Trout fishing, Camel, and Yak safaris, Pakistan is the place to be.

"Weather and climate"

Q1: How do sea levels, ocean currents, and wind directions affect climate?

Answer:

Sea Levels, ocean currents, and wind directions affect climate in the following ways.

Sea Levels: As we move higher the temperature decreases Mountainous areas are higher than the sea therefore the climate in mountainous areas is cold. Whereas the climate in the plains is relatively warmer e.g Murree is much cooler than Lahore.

Ocean Currents; The constant flow of water in the sea is called an ocean current. There are generally two types of ocean currents.

1. Warm Water Current  2. Cold Water Current

Warm Water Currents make the temperature of the coastal areas higher or milder while Cold Water Currents reduce the temperature of the surrounding coastal areas.

Wind Directions: Winds always blows from high-pressure areas to a low-pressure area. If the winds are coming from oceans or seas. It will contain moisture and will cause rain in the coastal areas if there is any hindrance. When winds blow from land to sea they are dry and cold just causing a change in temperature.

Q.2 Defined global warming. Write down a few lines about it.

Ans: Our earth is surrounded by a mixture of gases called the atmosphere. The rays of the Sun pass through this cover of gases to the earth. A certain percentage of the rays is absorbed by the Earth and some percentage is turned back. When these rays turn back, they can not escape the cover of the atmosphere because of the carbon dioxide and other gases in the atmosphere. In this way, they cause an increase in the temperature of the earth. This is called the greenhouse effect.

Global Warming: An increase in global temperature due to the greenhouse effect is called "Global Warming"

(P: 88 Picture)

Q3. Take a closer look at the picture. How does this activity affect the climate? Write a few lines about it.

Ans. Deforestation means cutting down trees without growing more trees. Trees absorb carbon dioxide directly and release oxygen. Tree falling causes extra carbon dioxide to be released into the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is believed to be a major cause of Global Warming.

Population"

Q.1. Explain the factors that are increasing in the population of Pakistan.

Ans. There are the following factors that are increasing in the population of Pakistan.

i. A very high birth rate has led to a growth rate of 2.1% in the Pakistani population.

ii. A single person cannot support his family in developing countries like Pakistan. He assumed that if he had more children there would be more earning hands to support the family.

iii. Due to illiteracy people are not aware of the economic problems caused by a high birth rate.

iv Family Planning available in Pakistan is not that effective.

v. The population is also growing due to modern medical facilities

Q.2. How will you be affected by the Increase in the number of students in your class?

Ans. An increase in the number of students in my class will reduce teaching effectiveness. It will put more burden on the teacher due to the fact that the teacher can not devote much time to particular students when teachers are able to devote more time to each student. Students may find it difficult to have personal contact with their teachers in a class of above 30 students. Teachers may not have so much time to give a student individually. Recreational activities will be reduced as space and resources for sports and other activities will be limited.

Q.3. What effect does population growth have on people's quality of life?

Ans: There is an interrelationship between population and quality of life. There is an adverse effect on the quality of life if the population growth rate is high. The available means and resources become less. More people means an increased demand for food, water, housing, energy, health care, transportation, etc which become difficult to manage.
