Sentence and Types of Sentences --- Easy English Grammar Notes

 

Sentence: 

A sentence is a set (or group) of words that is complete in itself to mean something. It typically contains a subject and predicate (Verb and Object). It can be a statement, exclamation, command, or question, and can be the main clause and sometimes consisting of one or more subordinate clauses


Example: 

1. We love Pakistan.

2. Pak Army is the greatest of all.



Types of Sentences


1. Simple Sentence:

A sentence that has one (subject + predicate)

Examples:

1. Twenty Freeport citizens protested against smoking.
2. Pak Army defeated terrorism.



2. Compound Sentence:

Two complete sentences joined by a comma + coordinating conjunction. A compound sentence is made up of two independent clauses connected by a coordinating conjunction. Coordinating conjunctions are easy to remember if you think of the words "FANBOYS":

(Coordinating Conjunctions: ForAndNorButOrYetSo)

Examples:

1. Twenty students protested against smoking, but the newspaper failed to cover the story. 

2. They came yet they did not help us.


3. Complex Sentence:

It is a combination of one independent clause and one dependent clause. The clauses are connected by subordinating conjunction. Dependent clauses cannot stand alone as a sentence, but they can be added to an independent clause to form a complex sentence.

Dependent clauses begin with subordinating conjunctions. Below are some of the most common subordinating conjunctions.

(subordinating conjunctions: After, although, as, because, before, even though, if, since, though, unless, until, when, whenever, whereas, wherever, while)

Examples:

1. Although citizens protested, the newspaper failed to cover the story.

2. We had gore before he reached.




4. Compound-Complex Sentence:

A compound-complex sentence is the combination of two independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses. Both coordinating and subordinating conjunctions are used in Compound-Complex sentences.

Examples:

1. My father and I went to the movie that I had been waiting to see, and then we went to the restaurant near the theatre.

2. We were reading and you were writing while they were playing.
