Subject of a sentence and its Types --- Easy English Grammar Notes

Sentence: 

A sentence is a set (or group) of words that is complete in itself to mean something. It typically contains a subject and predicate (Verb and Object).

Example: 

	Subjects	Verb	Objects
1.	Allah	helps	us.
2.	Muhammad (SAW)	brought	Allah's messages.
3.	The Muslims	recite	the Holy Quran.
4.	Pak Army	defeated	terrorism.
5.	The police	arrested	the criminals.

Subject:

The doer in a sentence is called the Subject. The subject is generally the person or thing that the sentence is about. It's often the person or thing that performs the action of the verb and it usually (but not always) comes before the verb:

Example: 

	Subjects	Verb	Objects
1.	Ahmad	followed	me.
2.	He	was eating	sandwiches.
3.	You	have written	books.

In the above sentences Ahmad, He, and You are subjects.

Note: 

In imperative sentences (i.e. one that expresses a command), the subject is usually understood without being explicitly stated (written) e.g.

Come here at once! 

(i.e. You come here at once!' - the subject you is understood.)

Kind of Subject: 

1. Simple Subject:

The simple subject is the main word or word group that tells whom or what the sentence is about. The simple subject is the term used for a single word which is the subject of a verb.

Example: 

1. He is my friend.

2. They will help me.

2. Compound Subject:

A compound subject is one that consists of more than one noun. (This includes pronouns, noun phrases, and noun clauses). When the subject of a sentence is made up of two or more elements, it's called a compound subject.

Example: 

1. A fool and his money are easily parted.

2. The pigeon and the falcon fell from view.

3. My friend and I cannot attend, unfortunately.

4. Neither the Levies nor the Police had any suitable vehicles.

3. Complete Subject:

The complete subject consists of all the words that tell whom or what a sentence is about. A complete subject is a simple subject, or the main word or words in a subject, along with any of the modifiers that might describe the subject.

Example: 

1. My favourite green sweater got a food stain on it.

2. The school choir is performing tomorrow night.

3. Our dinner guests seemed to enjoy their meals.

Subject Complement:

A subject complement is a word or phrase which follows a linking verb and describes the subject.

Note: A subject complement is either adjective, a noun, an adverb, or a pronoun.

Example: 

	Subjects	Linking Verb	Subject Complement
1.	He	will be	fine.
2.	Ali	is	a policeman.
3.	It	was	he.
