MODEL PAPER CLASS - V
GENERAL SCIENCE
SECTION - B (Subjective) ( 15 – Marks )

Time Allowed: 2 hours 10 minutes

Q.2.Read the given statement carefully and answer the given question at the end of every activity (Any 3)                        (5x3=15)

(a) Place a torch light or a candle on a table near a wall in the room. Place your hand between the wall and the light coming out from the candle or the torchlight as shown below

(i) What do you see on the wall?

Ans: I saw a shadow similar to the shape of my hand on the wall.

(ii) What happens to the shadow if you bring your hand near the candle?

Ans: The shadow of my hand got bigger in size on the wall than before.

(iii) Is there any change in the size of the shadow if you move your hand away from the candle?

Ans: When I moved my hand away from the candle the shadow of my hand got smaller in size on the wall than before.

(iv) How do you think the shadow is formed?

Ans: As my hand is non-transparent and blocks the path of light, so the shadow of my hand is formed on the wall.

(v) What do you conclude from the observation?

Ans: Light travel in a straight line. When non-transparent objects block the path of light, a shadow is formed in the opposite direction of the source of light. The shadow is similar to the shape of an object. When an object is near the source of light, its shadow becomes bigger in size, and smaller in size when an object is far away from the light source.

(b) Take 4 test tubes and mark them as A, B, C, and D.

Test tube A has a wet ball of cotton and seeds at room temperature. Put water in the tube daily and allow air in it
Test tube B has a dry cotton ball and seeds at room temperature.
Test tube C has a ball of cotton and seeds with water and oil at room temperature.
Test tube D has water, cotton, and seed in a freezer.

After a week

(i) In which test tube did the seeds germinate?

Ans. In test tube A.

(ii) Why did the seeds not germinate in test tube B?

Ans. Tube-B has no water which is one of the necessary conditions for germination.

(iii) Why did the seeds not germinate in test tube C?

Ans. Tube-C has no air which is one of the necessary conditions for germination.

(iv) Why did the seeds not germinate in test tube D?

Ans: Because Tube-D has no suitable temperature for germination.

(v)  What does this experiment prove?

Ans. The experiment proves that water, air (oxygen), and suitable temperature are the necessary conditions for seed germination.

(c) Put a sample of soil in a glass jar. Pour some water into it. Shake well to mix the soil and water. Place it on the table and observe it after 2 hours.

i. Do you observe layers in the jar?

Ans. Yes, three layers.

ii. What is at the bottom of the jar?

Ans: The bottom layer consists of gravel and sand.

iii. What do you see over it in the roily water?

Ans: Sticky types of soil (clay) are found in roily water.

iv. What is floating up on the surface of the water?

Ans: Dead vegetation is found floating over the top of the water's surface.

v. Which layer do you think will be the heaviest?

Ans. The bottom layer is the heaviest consisting of gravel and sand.

(d)
Suspend a bar magnet with the help of a thread such that it can
rotate freely. Take another bar magnet and bring it close to it:

(i) What happens when the north pole of the second magnet comes close to the north pole of the suspended magnet?

Ans: They will repel each other.

(ii)  What happens when the south pole of the second magnet comes close to the south pole of the suspended magnet?

Ans: They will repel each other.

(iii) What happens when opposite poles come near?

Ans: They will attract each other.

(iv) What do you conclude from this activity?

Ans. Two like magnetic poles repel each other while opposite poles attract each other.

(e) During the earthquake, what we need to do to be safe, write steps.

(i) When you are in the classroom?

Ans:
1) Keeping calm and assuring others.
2) Staying inside.
3) Taking cover under a desk, table, or doorway.
4) Staying away from glass doors, glass panes, and windows.

(ii) When you are out of danger?

Ans:
1) Checking myself and others for injuries.
2) Providing First-aid for anyone who needs it.
3) Will stay out immediately from the damaged area of the classroom.
4) Following the instruction of the seniors.

GENERAL SCIENCE
Section -C (Marks – 45)

Q.3. Answer the given short questions. (Any five)               (3x5=15)

i)    Why does a bulb light up in a closed circuit?

Ans: When the circuit becomes complete and current starts flowing through the bulb. Then it lights up.

ii)   When is your shadow the shortest and the longest in the sunlight?

Ans:

Shadows are shortest at noon when the sun appears highest in the sky.

Shadows are the longest in the early morning and late afternoon. When the Sun appears low in the sky.

iii)  Explain evaporation.

Ans:

Evaporation:

"The change of water into vapors is called Evaporation".

Examples:

i. Wet surfaces become dry due to evaporation as water moves in the surrounding air.

2. Evaporation takes place on the surface of oceans, canals, rivers, and leaves of plants.

iv)  What is the similarity between fungi and animals?

Ans:

i. Both fungi and animals are without chlorophyll.

ii. Both cannot prepare their own food and use external food sources for energy.

v) What is rusting and which type of change is this?

Ans:

Rusting:

The change that has occurred on the surface of iron is due to the action of oxygen and water and is called rusting. Due to this reaction, the colour of iron is changed.

Iron + Oxygen + Water = Rusting

It is a chemical change because a new substance iron oxide is formed.

vi) How will you compare self-pollination to cross-pollination?

Ans:

Self Pollination:

1. Self-pollination involves a single plant.

2. Pollinating agents are not necessary.

3. It can occur even when the flower is closed.

Cross-Pollination:

1. Cross-pollination involves two different plants of the same species.

2. Pollinating agents (wind, insects, birds) are required.

3. It occurs only the flower is open.

vii) Why does a geostationary satellite appear to be stationary?

Ans: A geostationary satellite is launched in such a way that it follows an orbit parallel to the equator and travels in the same direction as the earth's rotation with the same period of 24 hours (1 day). Thus, it appears stationary with respect to the earth's surface.

viii) What is an LED?

Ans: LEDs are tiny light-emitting bulbs. When a small voltage of two or three volts is applied across an LED it starts glowing.

Q.4. Draw and label a diagram for any two of the following. (5+5=10)

i)    Structure of maize seed
Ans:
(a)

(b)

ii)   Structure of the earth
Ans:

iii)
Structure of a flower
Ans:

Q.5. Draw a mind map of “Effects of 3 types of pollution”.   (10)

Ans.

Q.6. Give detailed answers to the following questions(any two) (5x2=10)

i)   What are the main causes of pollution?

Ans:

Causes of Pollution:

1. The main cause of air pollution is the poisonous substances present in the smoke, which is emitted by vehicles on the roads and factories.

2. The polluted water of sewerage, waste substances, insecticides, fertilizers, and leaking oil are the main causes of water pollution.

3. Garbage from homes, fertilizers, wastes, and a spray of chemical substances are the main causes of land pollution.

ii)  How do the plant roots and other creatures inside the earth respire?

Ans: The texture of silt is smooth and silky. It can hold more water. The moisture present in this soil provides water and minerals to plants. The air present in this soil makes alive plants and other creatures.

iii) How can you compare the speed of light and the speed of sound coming from lightning?

Ans: When lightning Strikes, lightning appears first, while the sound of lightning is heard a few moments later. Because the speed of light is more as compared to the Speed of sound.

iv)  The astronauts have to face lots of problems in space. Can you name
some of these problems?

Ans:

i. radiation

ii. lack of gravity

iii. disruption of senses

iv. bone and muscle deterioration
