Deforestation is the unplanned removal of trees on a large scale which converts forest to non-forest land. Forests are removed to meet the increasing demand for land and materials. 

Major causes of deforestation are:

• Urban development/urbanization
• Infrastructure development like roads, rail tracks, airports, etc.
• Timber and fibre requirement
• Wood for fuel
