Phrases and its types --- Easy English Grammar Notes

Phrases:

A phrase is a group of words that does not give complete meaning. A phrase is a small group of words that forms a unit within a sentence.

Examples:

1. They are on the roof.

2. He is in the room.

There are several different types of phrases.

1. Noun phrase:

A noun phrase is built around a single noun.

Examples:

1. A vase of roses stood on the table.

2. She was reading, a book about the emancipation of women.

2. Verb phrase:

A verb phrase is the verbal part of a clause.

Examples:

1. She had been living in London.

2. I will be going to college next year.

3. Adjective phrase:

An adjective phrase is built around an adjective.

Examples:

1. He has led a very interesting life.

2. A lot of the kids are really keen on football.

4. Adverbial phrase:

An adverbial phrase is built around an adverb by adding words before and/or after.

Examples:

1. The economy recovered very slowly.

2. They wanted to leave the country as fast as possible.

5. Prepositional phrase:

In a prepositional phrase, the preposition always comes at the beginning.

Examples:

1. I longed to live near the sea.

2. The dog was hiding under the kitchen table.
