Q(i). What is atmosphere?
Ans: Air is a mixture of gases. Air is present everywhere. Even in water and soil, air is present. Air covers the earth like a thick blanket. This blanket of air is called the atmosphere.

Q(ii). The atmosphere is divided into how many layers?
Ans: The atmosphere is divided into main four layers. Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, and Thermosphere
Q(iii). What is the importance of water?
- We breathe in the air. We cannot live without it.
- Air is needed for breathing.
- Air is needed for burning.
- Plants use air to make their food.
- We pump into the footballs, balloons, and tires of our vehicles.
Q(iv). Define wind.
Ans: Moving air is called wind. Differences in air temperature create winds. Wind can move slowly or fast. Wind comes from different directions.
Q(v). What is a wind wave?
Ans: A wind-wave shows wind direction. Scientists forecast about weather with the help of the wind.
Q(vi). What is a composition of air?
Ans: About 78 percent of the air is nitrogen gas. About 21 percent of air is oxygen gas. About 0.03 to 0.04 percent of air is carbon dioxide gas. The remaining air contains rare gasses like helium and organ.
Q(vii). Uses of nitrogen.
Ans: Nitrogen is used to preserve the freshness of foods. Nitrogen is used in days, medicines, and explosives. Liquid nitrogen is used as a coolant for freezing blood and a large computer system.
Q(viii). How does nitrogen affect the process of burning?
Ans: The presence of nitrogen slows down the process of burning. If there was mostly oxygen in the air, even every small fire in the would have caused great damage.
Q(ix). Describe the second major gas.
Ans: The second major gas of the air is oxygen. It is a colorless gas. It has no smell. Oxygen is slightly soluble in water. It is a very active gas.
Q(x). Give uses of oxygen.
Ans:
- All living organisms use oxygen for respiration.
- It is essential for the burning of wood, coal, and natural gas.
- It is used in welding and cutting of metals.
- Rockets use liquid oxygen during their space journeys
Q(xi). Give any three uses of carbon dioxide?
Ans:
- Green plants absorb carbon dioxide from the air to make food.
- Carbon dioxide is filled in soda water bottles under some pressure.
- A fire extinguisher releases carbon dioxide to put out fires.
Q(xii). What process is done in the Australian desert?
Ans: Dry ice is crushed into powder. This powder is carried high up in the clouds by an airplane. The dry ice is sprinkled on the clouds which are full of rain. This process is done in the Australian desert.
Q(xiii). What are rare gasses?
Ans: Rare gases include. Neon, helium, etc. They do not react with other elements. They do not cause burning. They are present in rare amounts in the air.
Q(xiv). Give any three uses of rare gasses.
Ans:
- Argon is used in electric bulbs and florescent bulbs.
- Neon is used in colorful advertisement lights.
- Helium is a very light gas. It is filled with weather balloons.
Q(xv). What is smog?
Ans: The presence of water vapours in the air sometimes produces smog. Smog is a combination of smoke and fog.
