Q. "Write Short Answers"

Q(i).  What is Microscope?

Ans: A microscope is an instrument that is used to see very small things that cannot be seen with the naked eye.

Q(ii). What are the main components of a microscope?

Ans: A light microscope has a base, an arm, a tube, a stage, and two adjustment screws.

Q(iii).  Define eyepiece?

Ans: The lens at the end of the tube through which we observe an object is called the eyepiece.

Q(iv).  Define objective lens?

Ans: The lens near the object to be seen is called the objective lens. Light is passed through the object from below using the mirror

Q(v). We can see an object up to a bigger size than its normal size?

Ans: We can see an object up to 1500 times bigger than its normal size.

Q(vi). What is the magnification power of an electron microscope?

Ans: An electron microscope can magnify the image up to 500,000 times.

Q(vii). What is a cell wall?

Ans: The outermost covering of a plant cell is called the cell wall.

Q(viii). What is the composition of the cell wall?

Ans: It is made up of hard materials called cellulose.

Q(ix). What is the function of the cell wall?

Ans: The cell wall supports the cell and gives shape. Animals do not have a cell wall.

Q(x). What is a cell membrane?

Ans: The outermost covering of an animal cell is called the cell membrane.

Q(xi). What is the function of the cell membrane?

Ans: The cell membrane controls the movement of materials in and out of the cell

Q(xii). What is cytoplasm?

Ans: Jelly-like material present inside the cell membrane is called cytoplasm. It contains water and other chemical substances.

Q(xiii). What are the endoplasmic reticulum and its function?

Ans: It is a network of channels. The movement of materials in the cells takes place through the endoplasmic reticulum.

Q(xiv). What is the function of chloroplast?

Ans: Chloroplasts are parts of a plant cell that contain chlorophyll. They trapped energy from the sun.

Q(xv). What are vacuoles and their function?

Ans: Vacuoles store waste materials, water, air, and food particles.

Q(xvi). What are centrioles and their function?

Ans: Two centrioles are present near the nucleus of an animal cell. They play an important role in animal cell division.

Q(xvii). Define Nucleus?

Ans: The most important part of a cell is called the nucleus.

Q(xviii). What is the function of the nucleus?

Ans: A nucleus is the control center of the cell. It controls all the activities of the cell.

Q(xix). Define chromosome?

Ans: A thin membrane, called a nuclear membrane, surrounds the nucleus, with many thread-like structures called chromosomes.

Q(xx). The human body contains how many chromosomes?

Ans: A human cell contains 46 chromosomes.

Q(xxi). Give two differences between plant and animal cells?

Ans:

Plant Cell Animal Cell
Cell wall is present
Chloroplast is present
Centrioles are absent
Cell wall is absent
Chloroplast is absent
Centrioles are present
